Majuba UCG Project Reaches 10,000 hours of continuous Operation

The first UCG plant in South Africa, ignited at Majuba, Mpumalanga Province, on 20 January 2007 celebrates 10,000 hours of continuous operation and gas production. The Majuba UCG project is based on Ergo Exergy’s proprietary εUCG™ technology and is developed by Eskom Holdings Ltd. This achievement further cements Ergo Exergy’s position as the world leader in UCG technology. The only two UCG operations conducted of this size and temporal scale in the world during the last 20 years have been based on Ergo Exergy’s proprietary εUCG™ technology. Eskom plans to continue operation of the trial plant while it assesses the commercial feasibility of using the gas for electricity generation. The plant is strategically located adjacent to Eskom’s 4.2 GW coal-fired Majuba Power Station which may eventually consume the gas, supplementing the use of coal.
