UCG Project: Stone Horne Ridge, Alaska, USA – CIRI/Laurus Energy

Cook Inlet Region Inc. (CIRI), a Native American owned corporation in Alaska has partnered up with Laurus Energy, Ergo Exergy’s North American technology licensee, to develop a εUCG™ project in Southern Alaska. With the project located in an environmentally sensitive area, its developers understand the importance of accessing the world’s only proven UCG technology, Ergo Exergy’s εUCG™.

The project, near the Beluga River in southern Alaska, is targeting relatively low energy content Beluga River coal. Traditional mining of this coal is expensive but underground gasification offers a cleaner, cheaper way to access the energy content. CIRI and Laurus Energy have initiated the process of planning and permitting and following trial operations, commercial power production is expected in 2014.

The project aims to achieve production of syngas via εUCG™, initially to generate 100MW of electricity with a Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT). Early indications however, show enough coal in the region for expansion of gas production for more electricity generation and other uses. The project will be designed and developed with the capability for carbon capture and storage.
